The doctor who worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in Surulere, was on his to a meeting when he received a call. He immediately told his driver to stop, came down from the car and jumped into the lagoon before anyone could stop him.
His body was discovered by the Marine Police at the Onikan end of the lagoon, 3-days after he jumped into the water on Sunday, March 19, 2017.
The State Commissioner of Police, Fatai Owoseni, stated that the Marine Police had to expand their search after 24hrs of search, from the spot Dr. Orji jumped yielded no result.
This was not the first time the deceased was attempting to take his own life. According to close neighbours, he had attempted to commit suicide a number of times in the past and about four years ago, had allegedly jumped down from the family's two-storey building at Odunukan Street, Ebute-Ejigbo, off Morroco Road, near the University of Lagos.
A neighbour narrated how he had been kept under close watch by the family after the incident:
"Four years ago, he attempted to kill himself and, thereafter, had tried doing so on a number of times and since then, his family had been monitoring him.
We don’t know the kind of sickness he was suffering from, but we knew he was being monitored. That was why he was assigned a driver to take him around," the neighbor said.
“He was such a gentle boy who never made any trouble. Perhaps the driver who drove him didn’t know about his condition because he was engaged about three months ago", another neighbour said.
